CORPORATE CONTROLLER

Standard Media Group (SMG), a leading media company, is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Corporate Controller to join our dynamic finance team. As the Corporate Controller, you will play a vital role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our financial operations. RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.  Financial Management:

  • Oversee the day-to-day financial operations of the company, including general accounting, financial reporting and assistance with budget process
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements, and corporate entity variance analysis
  • Work with Finance team on monthly variance analysis of budget versus actual and provide meaningful commentary regarding discrepancies. This includes working with key stakeholders on gathering information needed to prepare commentary
  • Implement and maintain effective internal controls to safeguard the company’s assets and ensure compliance with accounting standards, regulations (local, state and federal), and policies

2.  Compliance and Audit:

  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and accounting principles
  • Coordinate and manage external audits, including preparing audit schedules and supporting documentation
  • Monitor changes in accounting standards and assess their impact on the company’s financial reporting.

3.  Tax:

  • Work with Finance team and outside tax accountants to prepare, review and submit all required local, state and federal tax filings
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and tax accounting principles

4.  Working Capital Management:

  • Oversee Accounts Receivable process for entities, in collaboration with station Business Managers. This includes reviewing the process for A/R aging, coordinating invoice adjustments with sales department and processing customer refunds
  • Oversee Accounts Payable process for entities, in collaboration with station Business Managers. This includes reviewing the process for invoice coding against budget, monitoring invoice approval workflow and follow-up with vendors as needed

5.  Human Resources / Benefits and Insurance:

  • Coordinate with the Chief Legal Office and Head of Human Resources to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and best practices
  • Help to oversee weekly and semi-monthly payroll process, including management of timecards for hourly employees and employee expense reporting
  • Work with outside benefits consultant to evaluate annual healthcare and other benefit pricing; coordinate with Human Resources on open enrollment processes
  • Assist with yearly insurance renewals

6.  Financial Planning and Analysis:

  • Collaborate with Finance Leadership team to develop financial plans, forecasts, and budgets

7.  Team Leadership:

  • Lead and develop a high-performing finance team, providing guidance, mentoring, and training to enhance their skills and expertise
  • Foster a collaborative and results-oriented work environment that encourages teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement
  • Collaborate on hiring, onboarding, and performance evaluation processes for the finance team members

REQUIREMENTS:

1.  Education and Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license

2.  Experience:

  • Proven experience as a Corporate Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or similar role in a medium to large-sized company with multiple business units
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and financial reporting requirements
  • Experience in the media industry or a related field is desirable but not specifically required

3.  Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in financial software systems and ERP platforms
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Teams, SharePoint and other MS Office applications
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and accuracy

4.  Leadership and Communication:

  • Dependable, reliable, trustworthy, dedicated and committed to maintaining the highest ethical standards with a relentlessly positive attitude
  • Excellent leadership and people management abilities; must have managed at a team of at least two or more people for a few years or more
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate and build relationships across departments

WORK LOCATION:

  • Open to qualified candidates physically located in or around the following markets: 1) Nashville, TN 2) Lincoln, NE 3) Atlanta, GA 4) Providence RI or 5) remote (Eastern/Central time zones)
